“The soul is healed by being with children.”
Fyodor Dostoevsky(1880)
Dostoevsky's final and greatest novel asks whether God exists and whether, without God, everything is permitted. The three Karamazov brothers represent different responses to these questions: Ivan the intellectual atheist, Dmitri the passionate sensualist, Alyosha the man of faith. Their father is murdered; the wrong brother stands trial. The Grand Inquisitor chapter is the most famous philosophical passage in fiction. Dostoevsky died three months after completion, planning a sequel. What remains is complete in itself, the fullest expression of his vision.
