“Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more.”
William Shakespeare(1606)
Three witches prophesy that Macbeth will be king, and he makes the prophecy come true through murder. Shakespeare's shortest tragedy is also his most concentrated, its language thick with darkness, blood, and sleeplessness. Lady Macbeth's ambition drives the first half; Macbeth's guilt and paranoia drive the second. The play moves so fast that there is no time to breathe. Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow: the famous speech comes when everything has already been lost, and Macbeth knows it.
