Lemuel Gulliver, ship's surgeon, visits Lilliput (tiny people), Brobdingnag (giants), Laputa (philosophers), and the land of the Houyhnhnms (rational horses ruling brutal humanoids called Yahoos). Swift published it in 1726, and it has been read as a children's book ever since, which would have appalled him. The satire on human pretension grows fiercer with each voyage until, in the fourth, Gulliver can no longer bear the sight of his own species. It is the greatest satire in English, and the most misanthropic.
