One great work, every day

“A man doesn't have just one form. He's like the ocean, full of currents and movement.”
August Strindberg(1888)
The Count's daughter and his valet: a midsummer night, a seduction, and the class system cracking open. Strindberg wrote this one-act naturalist tragedy in 1888, and it scandalized Europe. The play is relentless, its single room a pressure cooker, its characters both individuals and representatives of their sex and class. Strindberg's preface, arguing for naturalism in theater, was as influential as the play itself. Julie's final exit is one of the most disturbing endings in drama.
