“I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.”
Anne Frank(1947)
Anne Frank, thirteen years old, begins a diary in 1942, continues it in hiding in Amsterdam, and is arrested two years later. She died in Bergen-Belsen. Her father, the only family member to survive, published the diary after the war. Anne's voice is remarkable: intelligent, funny, self-aware, dreaming of being a writer. The intimacy of the diary form makes her presence unbearable, because we know what she does not. The book has been translated into seventy languages. It is not a monument but a voice, a girl talking to herself, to us, to the future she did not reach.
