“We must cultivate our garden.”
Voltaire(1759)
Candide, raised to believe this is the best of all possible worlds, is expelled from his Eden and travels through war, earthquake, slavery, and every imaginable horror, still seeking Cunégonde and still accompanied by his optimistic tutor Pangloss. Voltaire wrote this in a few weeks, furious at Leibnizian optimism and at the Lisbon earthquake that killed thirty thousand. The satire is savage, the pace relentless, the conclusion famous: we must cultivate our garden. Voltaire published it anonymously and denied writing it. The garden remains. The catastrophes continue. The best of all possible worlds keeps happening.
