A writer lies dying of gangrene in Africa, reviewing his life, the stories he never wrote, the talent he wasted. Hemingway published this as a story, drawing on his own African safari and his own fears of not living up to his gifts. The prose alternates between the dying present and italicized memories of all the places and experiences that were supposed to become literature. The wife who loves him cannot save him. The leopard frozen near the summit remains unexplained. The story is about failure, about art, about the lies we tell ourselves. The snow at the top is very white and very cold.
