Tony Last loves his Gothic country house and his faithless wife; she loves neither, and her affair sets in motion a chain of events that ends in the jungle. Waugh wrote this as savage comedy, and the ending, when it comes, is one of the cruelest in English fiction. The prose is elegant and detached, the satire on English society precise. Tony is a good man, which means he is doomed. The novel's title comes from The Waste Land. Waugh shows us what civilization has come to. The Victorians would have been horrified. That is the point.
