- 1852Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin was published as a book, after forty weeks as a newspaper serial. Three hundred thousand copies sold in the first year. Lincoln, meeting Stowe a decade later, allegedly called her the little woman who had made this great war.
