- 1519Ferdinand Magellan sailed from Sanlúcar de Barrameda with five ships and about 270 men. Eighteen came home three years later in the smallest of them, and nearly everything known about what happened between is owed to the diary of Antonio Pigafetta, a passenger who signed on to watch.
