• 1979Pan Books published The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, worked up by Douglas Adams from his own radio series. It opens with a man lying in front of a bulldozer to save his house, ends with the earth demolished for a bypass anyway, and sold a quarter of a million copies in three months.
