  • 1900During the Boxer Rebellion siege of Beijing, fire destroyed the Hanlin Academy, housing one of China's oldest libraries. Both sides blamed the other; centuries of manuscripts, including volumes of the 22,000-chapter Yongle encyclopedia, were lost.
