- 1908Richard Wright was born on a plantation between Roxie and Natchez, Mississippi. Barred at seventeen from the Memphis library, he borrowed a white coworker's card and forged notes saying the books were for a white man. Native Son became the Book of the Month Club's first choice by a Black author.
