- 1823An anonymous poem called 'A Visit from St. Nicholas' appeared in the Troy Sentinel, delivered to the editor by a friend of the author. Clement Clarke Moore later claimed it; a rival scholar credits Henry Livingston Jr. The reindeer have not settled it.
