"In walks these three girls in nothing but bathing suits," and with that sentence, cheerfully ungrammatical, John Updike hands you the voice of Sammy, nineteen, stuck at a checkout in a small-town supermarket a few miles from the beach. He watches them drift barefoot down the aisles against the traffic of housewives he calls sheep, and he notices everything: the leader he names Queenie, the straps slipped off her shoulders, the jar of Kingfish Fancy Herring Snacks she carries to his register.

In walks these three girls in nothing but bathing suits.
