The last Laurie Lee saw of his Cotswold valley was his mother, stooping waist-deep in the long grass, and then he was gone, nineteen years old, with a violin wrapped in a blanket and a tin of treacle biscuits. He walked to London, then took a boat to Spain for no better reason than that he knew how to ask for a glass of water in Spanish.

For the first time I was learning how much easier it was to leave than to stay behind and love.
