The zoo in Kyiv could no longer feed its animals, so it gave them away, and Viktor Zolotaryov, a writer who cannot finish anything, went home with a king penguin. Misha is melancholy and has a weak heart; he shuffles through the flat at night and soaks in a bathtub of cold water, a creature of the ice marooned among the tower blocks.

The pure and sinless did not exist, or else died unnoticed and with no obituary.
