Each morning on the ward, the women due for electric shock treatment wait in a line, and Istina Mavet waits among them, listening to the ones ahead of her go under. Janet Frame wrote this novel out of eight years in New Zealand's mental hospitals, where she was herself scheduled for a leucotomy; the operation was called off when her first book won a literary prize.

I did not know my own identity. I was burgled of body and hung in the sky like a woman of straw.
