Pine Block is a state-housing estate of gravel yards and broken fences, and on a Saturday night the party moves from the pub to the Hekes' kitchen, where it ends, sooner or later, in Jake Heke's fists. Jake is famous for those fists; he can clear a bar, and at home he turns them on Beth, his wife, while their children lie awake listening.

Bastard, she’d think, looking out her back kitchen window.
