On a hill above the lake stands the villa of the engineer Carl Tobler, with its garden, its new grotto and its office under the family roof, and almost nothing invented there will ever sell. There is the Advertising Clock, its face ringed with paid notices; there is a vending machine for the cartridges of rifle clubs; there is an ingenious invalid's bed that nobody orders.

One morning at eight o'clock a young man stood at the door of a detached, apparently handsome house.
