Rain is falling on Stockholm one November night, and a red double-decker bus has run off the road, its passengers cut down by a submachine gun. One of the bodies belongs to Åke Stenström, a young detective who was off duty and had told no one why he was riding that bus.

On the evening of the thirteenth of November it was pouring in Stockholm.
