Two and a half thousand years ago, someone began collecting the stories people were already telling: a crow and a pitcher, a hare and a tortoise, a wolf who cried wolf. This is a slow read through the best of them, two or three fables a day for about two months, grouped into ten arcs by what they teach, from cleverness and pride to the gods and the last things. The morals are explicit and the animals are relentless, and by the end you will have read the oldest surviving body of storytelling in Western literature, a little at a time.
