Hans Christian Andersen was a cobbler's son from Odense who went to Copenhagen at fourteen to be famous, and became so, though not for the plays and novels he cared most about. His fairy tales are not quite for children. They are funny and cruel and strange, full of vain emperors, lonely trees, shadows that come loose and girls who freeze in the snow, and they rarely end the way a child would choose. Fourteen of the best, one a night, beginning on his birthday.
