On the evening of 2 October 1872, according to Jules Verne, a London gentleman of perfect habits bet his club twenty thousand pounds that he could go round the world in eighty days, and left at a quarter to nine with his new French manservant and a carpet bag. The novel first appeared as a newspaper serial, and readers in Paris followed Fogg's progress as if it were news. Thirty-seven chapters, one a day, from the anniversary of the wager: Suez, Bombay, an elephant through the jungle, Hong Kong, Yokohama, the Pacific Railroad and the Atlantic in winter, with a detective on his heels the whole way.
