Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in six weeks in 1843, walking fifteen miles a night through London to keep the words coming. He was furious about a parliamentary report on child labour. The result was one of the most read books in English, and still the most direct argument Dickens ever made: that people can change, and that the cost of not changing is everything. Five staves, five nights, ending on Christmas morning. Everyone reads together.
