On an exceptionally hot evening early in July, a former student leaves his garret in St Petersburg to rehearse a murder. Raskolnikov has a theory that some people are allowed to step over the line, and he means to find out whether he is one of them. Crime and Punishment is what comes after the axe: fever, guilt, a family arriving at the worst moment, a long duel with an examining magistrate who knows, and an epilogue in Siberia. Dostoevsky wrote it as a magazine serial in 1866, in debt and against a deadline. Forty-one chapters, one a day, from the start of July.
