Great Expectations first came out a chapter or two a week in Dickens's own magazine, All the Year Round, from December 1860, and readers waited each week to find out what became of Pip. It is the story of a blacksmith's boy who is suddenly made a gentleman by an unknown benefactor, and of what that does to him, and it is the most tightly made of all Dickens's novels. Read it at something like the pace it was written for: a chapter a day, fifty-nine days, from the convict in the churchyard to the ruins of Satis House.
