Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, one part a day for seven days (his own three parts, split further so no night runs too long). A sailor named Marlow takes a steamboat up the Congo to bring back an ivory agent named Kurtz, and finds at the end of the river something about the colonial enterprise, and about himself, that he can barely say aloud. Conrad saw it firsthand in 1890. Read it the way Marlow tells it, in the dark, waiting for the tide.
