Conan Doyle never told us when Sherlock Holmes was born. His readers decided for him: the Baker Street Irregulars, the oldest of the societies devoted to him, settled on the sixth of January, Twelfth Night, and have toasted him on it every year since. This read-along keeps the date with the twelve stories that made him, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, published together in 1892 after a year in the Strand Magazine. A King in a mask, a league of red-headed men, a goose with a jewel in its crop and a speckled band. One adventure a day, each one whole.
