Montague Rhodes James was a medieval scholar, Provost of King's College Cambridge, and the greatest writer of ghost stories in English. He invented the form that all the others imitate: a quiet antiquarian, a fragment of old Latin, a moment of careless curiosity, and then something in the room that was not there before. He read these aloud by candlelight each Christmas Eve to a circle of friends. Eight stories, eight nights.
