Everyone knows the ending of Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and almost nobody has read the book, which is a pity, because it was written so that you would not know it. It is a mystery told by a dry, decent lawyer who keeps finding out less than he wants to. Stevenson wrote the first draft in three days, burned it when his wife criticised it, and wrote it again in three more. It was published on 5 January 1886 and sold forty thousand copies in six months. Ten short chapters, one a day, from the door in the side street to the doctor's own statement.
