In the spring of 1819, with his brother newly dead of tuberculosis and the same disease already in him, John Keats wrote five of the greatest poems in the English language in a matter of weeks, and added To Autumn that September. The six odes are the high-water mark of Romanticism: the nightingale he longs to vanish into, the urn that has stopped time, the secret that melancholy lives inside delight. Six poems, one a day, in the order he wrote them, ending in the long gold light of autumn.
