At nineteen, Anne Elliot was persuaded to break off her engagement to a young naval officer with no money and no connections. Eight years later he is Captain Wentworth, made rich by the war, and his sister has taken her father's house. Persuasion is Austen's last finished novel and her most grown-up: quieter than the others, sharper about money and rank, and about what it costs to wait. It moves from Somerset to the sea at Lyme and on to Bath, and it holds the most famous letter in English fiction. Twenty-four chapters, one a day, ending on her birthday.
