Pride and Prejudice came out on 28 January 1813, and Jane Austen called it her own darling child. It has been read ever since by people who think they know it from the adaptations, and are surprised by how funny it is, how quick, and how much of it happens in conversation. The chapters are short, some of them a few pages, and it reads best slowly, a visit or a letter at a time, the way news travelled in Hertfordshire. Sixty-one chapters, one a day, from Netherfield being let at last to the final word on everybody.
