Hermann Hesse set this short novel in the time of the Buddha, but it is one man's search, not a saint's. A Brahmin's gifted son leaves his father, the ascetics, and the Buddha himself, certain that wisdom cannot be taught, only lived. He loses himself in the world, comes to the edge of the river meaning to drown, and finds his teacher at last in a ferryman who listens to the water. One chapter a day, twelve days.
