Marcus Aurelius ruled Rome for nineteen years and wrote the Meditations in the evenings, in camp, in Greek, for no one but himself. He never published them. They are notes toward a practice: a daily effort to think clearly, act well, and not be broken by things outside his control. This is a curated way through them, the strongest entries gathered into six arcs, from the debts he owed the people who made him to the last page. A few minutes a day, forty-two mornings. The whole book waits in the library when you want it.
