The Tao Te Ching is eighty-one short verses written, according to tradition, by a keeper of the imperial archive who grew tired of the world and rode west on a buffalo. A border guard stopped him and asked him to write down what he knew before he left. The result is five thousand characters on the nature of things: how the softest overcomes the hardest, how action accomplishes most by striving least, how the sage leads by placing herself behind. Twenty-one verses, one a day for three weeks.
