On 24 February 1815 a young sailor brings his ship home to Marseilles, is promoted captain, and is engaged to be married, all in one day. By that night he has been arrested on a charge he does not understand and is on his way to an island prison. The Count of Monte Cristo is what happens over the next twenty-three years: an escape, a treasure, and a revenge worked out so slowly and so completely that it becomes a kind of judgement. Dumas wrote it as a newspaper serial, and it reads best that way: a hundred and seventeen chapters, one a day, through the spring.
