Every spring Athens stopped work for the City Dionysia, and the whole city sat on the slope below the Acropolis to watch new plays from dawn to dusk. Almost everything we mean by drama was made there in one long lifetime: tragedy by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, comedy by Aristophanes. This is seven nights of it, one whole play a night: a king murdered in his bath, a sister who buries her brother, a man who solves his own crime, a mother's revenge, Socrates in a basket, a sex strike, and a god who will not be refused.
