Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, one part a day for three days. A travelling salesman wakes one morning to find he has become an enormous insect, and the story that follows is less about the transformation than about his family, the locked door, and how quickly love curdles into management. Read it in three sittings, the way it is built, and let the first sentence sit with you.
