In 1845 Henry David Thoreau built a cabin by a pond and went to live deliberately, to see what was left of life when you stripped it back to the essentials. This is a curated way through the book, thirty short readings following his year from the move in to the thaw. It opens where most readers wish it opened, on the chapter about why he went, and holds his long opening account of the costs until you care what they bought. Every chapter is represented; the complete Walden waits in the library.
