The Wind in the Willows began as bedtime stories and letters that an official of the Bank of England wrote for his small son. It follows four friends on an English river: the Mole, who walks out of his spring-cleaning one morning and never goes back to it; the Water Rat, who has never wanted to be anywhere but the river; Badger, wise and unsociable in the Wild Wood; and Toad of Toad Hall, rich, boastful and mad about motor-cars. Half of it is comedy, and half is something stranger and quieter about home, friendship and the turning year. Twelve chapters, one a day, from Grahame's birthday.
