Wuthering Heights came out in December 1847 under the name Ellis Bell, and its first reviewers did not know what to make of it: a novel of such violence and such feeling, set in a farmhouse on the Yorkshire moors, told by a housekeeper to a London tenant who understands almost nothing he hears. It is not a love story, or not only one. It is about two families, two houses, and a foundling who takes them both apart, and then what grows in the ruins. Thirty-four chapters, one a day, from the summer anniversary of the birth of the woman who wrote it.
