The snow starts and does not stop, sealing every path down from the mountains, and the stranger it traps is a teacher who cannot speak a single word the villagers understand. Ferit Edgü strands this educated outsider in a Kurdish hamlet in the far southeast of Turkey, close to the Iraqi border, and lets the cold do the rest: children he is meant to teach but cannot reach, sickness and death he can only stand beside, faces he learns to read by their weather alone.

Didn't I tell you, my boat struck the rocks and sank.
