A thought reader at a hotel in Nice names the word a millionaire has written on a folded slip of paper, and a few days later the millionaire finds he has signed away a fortune in his own hand and cannot remember doing it. The conjuror is Colonel Clay, named for a face he can work like the stuff itself, and twelve times over he strips Sir Charles Vandrift, South African diamond king, who never once sees him coming.

My name is Seymour Wilbraham Wentworth. I am brother-in-law and secretary to Sir Charles Vandrift, the South African millionaire and famous financier.
