Under the bed in an Antiguan house sits a trunk holding every scrap of a girl's life, and her mother lifts the things out one by one, the christening gown, the first pair of shoes, telling the story attached to each while the daughter listens as though to scripture about herself. Then comes the afternoon her mother tells her they will no longer wear dresses cut from the same cloth, that she cannot go on being a little version of her, and the world splits.

My unhappiness was something deep inside me, and when I closed my eyes I could even see it.
