A poor, sensitive boy grows up under a joyless, strict religious household in eighteenth century Germany, and finds his only escape from poverty and humiliation in a growing, half desperate obsession with the theatre.

This psychological novel might equally well be called a biography, since its observations are for the most part taken from real life.
