Three drops of blood fall on snow, and a young knight stands so lost in them, seeing his lady's face, that he forgets the world and has to be knocked out of the trance. Chrétien de Troyes wrote for the courts of Champagne and Flanders, and out of his rhyming couplets came Camelot, Lancelot and the grail, which is not yet holy here, only a dish carried through a hall by a girl.

The knight hesitated only for a couple of steps before getting in.
