César Vallejo opens by promising that he will die in Paris in a downpour, on a day he already remembers, and the line has the eerie calm of a man reading his own future off a wet window. He even guesses the weekday: a Thursday, in autumn, like the one he is writing on.

I will die in Paris in a downpour, on a day I already remember.
