On a wet flyover near Heathrow, chrome and torn safety glass arrange themselves around a body, and the narrator finds, to his horror and then his fascination, that the wound excites him. This is a novel about people aroused by car crashes: about Vaughan, the scarred visionary who photographs collisions and dreams of dying in a head-on impact with Elizabeth Taylor, and the circle he draws into his fever, tracing the shapes a dashboard stamps into flesh.

Vaughan died yesterday in his last car-crash. During our friendship he had rehearsed his death in many crashes, but this was his only true accident.
